Five days in Tana Toraja gives you the space to move slowly, follow opportunities as they arise (a ceremony on short notice, a market day, a spontaneous village encounter), and explore beyond the main tourist sites.
Day 1: Arrival & Gentle Orientation
Arrive in Rantepao. Light afternoon walk around the town. Check in, rest, and meet your guide for a planning session. Discuss ceremony schedules, market days, and your specific interests.
Day 2: Rantepao District – Core Sites
Full day covering the main Rantepao-area sites: Kete Kesu, Lemo, Pana, and Rantepao market (if market day). Unhurried pace — spend 2 hours at each main site rather than 45 minutes.
Day 3: Northern Toraja – Bori & Highlands
Drive north: Bori Kalimbuang megaliths → Sa’dan weaving village → continue to Batutumonga for late afternoon and overnight stay (basic guesthouse). Sunset views over the valley.
Day 4: Batutumonga – Trek & Return
Sunrise at Batutumonga. Full-day trek: Batutumonga → Lokomata burial cliff (rock-carved graves at altitude) → highland villages → Tikala. Pickup and return to Rantepao for final night. Evening: try local restaurants and a night market if available.
Day 5: Southern Toraja – Makale Area
Day trip south to the Makale area of South Toraja regency: Sangalla traditional villages, Suaya cliff graves (royal burial site), Tilanga natural spring, and Makale’s colonial-era Catholic church. Return to Rantepao for late afternoon departure.
Ceremony Slot
If a funeral ceremony coincides with any day of your visit, your guide will adjust the itinerary to include it. This is always the highest priority — ceremonies are not predictable and you may not have another chance.
Travel times, flight schedules, opening conditions, ceremony dates and prices change. Confirm the details that matter to your trip when you enquire.
