Tana Toraja produces some of Indonesia’s most distinctive crafts and food products. Here is a practical guide to what is worth buying — and where to find it.
Toraja Woven Cloth (Ma’a)
Traditional Toraja cloth is made on backstrap looms using geometric patterns that carry cultural significance. The most authentic pieces are bought directly from weavers in Sa’dan village, 20 km north of Rantepao. Prices are fair and you know exactly where your purchase comes from. Scarves, table runners, and sarong lengths are available. Avoid the tourist market pieces made from machine-printed fabric imitating traditional patterns.
Toraja Arabica Coffee
Toraja coffee is one of Indonesia’s premium exports. Buy whole beans from local roasters in Rantepao — fresher and significantly cheaper than the same coffee in Jakarta or Makassar. Look for the “Toraja Kalosi” label, which designates a specific highland growing area. Bring a small airtight container or resealable bag.
Carved Wood Panels and Objects
Toraja wood carving is elaborate — the same intricate patterns that cover the tongkonan facades are reproduced on smaller decorative pieces: small panel sections, serving boards, boxes, and figurines. Quality varies widely. The best pieces are made by traditional carvers in Rantepao workshops. Allow time to examine the carving quality before purchasing.
Tau-Tau Miniatures
Small wooden tau-tau figures (miniature versions of the cliff grave effigies) are sold throughout Rantepao. Quality ranges from tourist trinkets to carefully carved figures that replicate traditional forms. Ask your guide to recommend carvers who produce authentic work.
Palm Wine (Ballo)
Fresh ballo (palm wine) is not suitable for travel, but bottled versions are available in Rantepao. A traditional palm wine brings memories of Toraja evenings — though check airline regulations before packing it.
Shopping Tips
